Greece’s non-essential movement restrictions are still valid and will be lifted after Sunday, Greek Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias reminded on Wednesday. “Until then, movement needs documentation or an sms,” the minister said during a media briefing, one day after Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that the government would loosen the measures taken to halt the spread of Covid-19, as of Monday, May 4. Minister Hardalias clarified that travel outside ones prefectures to summer homes and villages remains prohibited and offenders will be fined, as checks will be carried out regularly. He also said that those who are in violation of the measure concerning the mandatory use of a mask – in public transport and indoor areas – will be fined 150 euros. “The virus remains here, there is no vaccine or cure yet. We cannot have a police officer next to every citizen. That is why everyone’s individual responsibility is our greatest weapon”, the minister underlined. Moreover, Hardalias informed that during the last two days, six more flights arrived in Greece from abroad, with a total of 514 passengers. Nine tested positive for coronavirus. According to the latest data, the coronavirus virus has infected 2,576 people in Greece and the death toll has reached 139.
