Athens welcomed the New Year with a colorful light and fireworks show that included video projections and beloved songs from the municipality’s symphony orchestra and choir.

Due to coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions, the new year celebration was a live-stream virtual event by Greek state TV channel ERT1 and digital platform ertflix.gr.

“We may not have been close, side by side, but this year – more than ever – we have achieved to be ‘together’,” the municipality said in an announcement.

Hosted by Greek actors, Maria Kitsou and Dimitris Gotsopoulos, the show included the screening of videos with wishes for the new year, sent in by Athenians.

“I hope 2021 will find us all healthy and winners. After all, life always wins,” Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis said shortly before midnight.
