The Greek island of Skiathos is one step closer to creating its own electric bike-sharing network after the Development Ministry approved the project’s funding with 247,853 euros.

The project foresees the development of an automated electric bicycle system for public use.

Starting in 2023, the Skiathos Municipality is planning to operate mixed stations that will offer cyclists conventional and electric bicycles free of charge. The stations will be available in 10 locations – depending on demand-  with nine to be located in the town of Skiathos and one in the area of Koukounaries.

Cyclists will be able to select a bike, use it for as long as they wish and return it in one of the municipality’s bike stations.

“The stations will provide Skiathos’ residents and visitors with a modern transportation tool that will contribute to the reduction of pollution, noise and traffic congestion while it will raise environmental awareness and improve public health,” the municipality said in an announcement.

In addition, bicycles will serve as an alternative way for tourists to move around the island and visit local sites.

According to Skiathos Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas, environmental protection and sustainable living constitute major challenges for cities and destinations.

“The use of bicycles could contribute to the creation of a modern and environmentally friendly city on Skiathos,” he said.

Skiathos certified once again as bike friendly destination

Tzoumas also announced that Skiathos has been certified with the Bike Friendly Destination eco-label for a second year in a row.

The  label certifies that a destination or municipality meets a set of strict criteria that create a “cycling identity’” at the destination and make it easier for visitors to use the bicycle during their holidays. It also contributes to the promotion of cycling as a way of recreation, sport, and transportation.

This is excellent news. My husband and I are spending the whole month of June 2024 at the Mandraki Village Boutique Hotel. We would like to reserve a bicycle for my husband and an e-tricycle for me. Can this be arranged? We are both very happy to return to Skiathos and the e-bikes . Thank you! Valerie FINHERT
