Over 50,000 Athenians and visitors took part in more than 100 events organized in various locations around the Greek capital during May 1-31, as part of the This is Athens City Festival.

A celebration open to all, the festival included guided tours, screenings, parties, exhibitions and lectures held at parks, squares, as well as in neighborhoods around the city.

According to Athens Development and Destination Management Agency (EATA) CEO Vangelis Vlachos, the This is Athens City Festival was first scheduled to take place in March 2021 but was postponed twice due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

As he said, the initial aim of the municipal authority was to promote Athens and attract more visitors, but the pandemic changed both the festival’s dates and objectives.

“It is not only visitors who wish to discover Athens. After two years of Covid-19, we have realized that the city’s residents wish to rediscover their city. This was also confirmed by the large number of residents who participated in the festival’s activities, exceeding our expectations,” Vlachos said.

Vlachos also expressed his confidence that the festival will return even stronger in 2023.

The This is Athens City Festival offered 31 days of fun with parties, concerts, dj sets, the Athens Gardens Festival, gastronomy events including the Street Food Festival, cultural activities at museums and archaeological sites, guided tours to some of Athens’ landmark monuments; movie screenings during the Greek Cinema Nights event; exhibitions and many more.
