Jet2 to Boost Seat Availability to South Aegean Islands in 2023

Increasing the number of flights in 2023 to the South Aegean Islands which include favorites like Rhodes, Mykonos and Santorini topped the agenda of talks this week between South Aegean Region Governor George Hatzimarkos and representative of UK leisure travel group Jet2.

“We are increasing our air capacity to the South Aegean islands because we believe in this region. From 203,000 air passenger seats in 2019 to 379,000 in 2022, up by 87 percent, and from this to 410,000 for the following year in 2023,” said Janice Mather, head of Airports and Tourism Organizations, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays.

On the back of a robust 2022, Jet2 will renew its trust in Greece and bet on the Cyclades and the Dodecanese island with a 10 percent increase in store for 2023 despite the energy crisis and inflationary pressures.

“The increase in the number of seats after a very strong year reflects the leading tourism organization’s confidence in a mature and serious destination that has prepared systematically and worked hard to succeed during the most difficult period in the history of tourism,” said Hatzimarkos.

The two sides also discussed the possibility of running flights from the larger islands in the region to smaller destinations.

Μather said Greece’s and the South Aegean Region’s effective Covid-19 management during the tourist season has played a very important role in the group’s decision.

Tourist arrivals to the South Aegean Region islands have hit record highs so far this year exceeding pre-Covid 2019 levels. Indicatively, more than 3 million tourists have visited the region’s islands so far making it one of the most popular destinations in 2022.

Jet2’s summer programme for 2023 includes flights to the Greek islands from Belfast International, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Manchester and London Stansted.
