March 8 Nationwide Strike in Greece to Affect Ferry Services, Public Transport

Public transportation in Athens and ferry travel in Greece will be disrupted on Wednesday, March 8, due to a 24-hour strike called by the Greek Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY), the country’s main public sector umbrella union.

The strike has been announced in reaction to last week’s fatal train crash in Tempi, Central Greece, which killed 57 passengers and left dozens injured.

According to announcements so far, on Wednesday:

– public services in Greece will be closed

– ferry employees will be on a 24-hour strike, as announced by the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation, known as PNO. (Travelers who have booked ferry tickets for Wednesday, are advised to check with their travel agents or contact local port authorities for further information.)

– the electric railway ISAP (line 1) will operate only between 11am – 5pm.

– Athens’ metro lines 2 and 3 will operate only between 12pm – 4pm.

– the tram will operate only between 11am – 5pm.

– OASA buses and ILPAP trolley-buses will be on a 24-hour strike

– pharmacies will be closed between 11am – 3pm

– school teachers will not attend classes.

The Federation of Railway Employees are extending their strike mobilization through Wednesday, which affects all domestic (OSE) and suburban (proastiakos) train routes. Railway services have been suspended since the deadly train crash occurred last week.

ADEDY has called for a protest rally on Wednesday at 12:30 at Klafthmonos Square in central Athens.
