EU Ambassadors Confirm Investor Interest in Greek Tourism Projects

Investment opportunities in Greece and mainly in tourism were the focus of an EU ambassadors event held at the Swedish Institute in Athens this week.

Addressing the event organized by the Swedish EU presidency, Greek Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias spoke about actions taken during the Covid crisis as well as plans for the future of the tourism sector, a key driver of the Greek economy. Tourism accounts for nearly 25 percent Greek GDP and creates hundreds of jobs.

During the event Swedish Ambassador to Greece, Johan Borgstam, confirmed that every year some 850,000 tourists visiting the country are from Sweden.

Participating ambassadors confirmed that there was strong investor interest for Greek tourism-related infrastructure projects. Among others, actions taken to further promote alternative destinations and year-round tourism have contributed greatly to the growing interest.

“Tourist infrastructure upgrades in Greece with a focus on sustainable development and the green and blue economy have already begun and is a  ‘bet’ in the coming years. By making use of available financial tools, and especially the RRF, we are proceeding with projects that will give further impetus to Greek tourism with the main axes being the protection of the environment and the preservation of the country’s identity and cultural heritage,” said Kikilias.
