The first two seaplanes to operate routes once Greece’s waterway network is completed are ready and waiting for the go-ahead, according to Greek seaplane operator Grecian Air Seaplanes.

Grecian Air Seaplanes belongs to a group of companies headed by Greek Water Airports (Ellinika Ydatodromia) working towards the creation and management of an extensive waterway network across Greece set to offer travelers seaplane flights.

According to the companies, the largest network in Greece, which includes 30 seaplane ports in the South Aegean linking with destinations in the Cyclades, DodecaneseCrete and on the mainland, is in the final stretch.

Currently dozens of seaplane port projects are underway while many more destinations have submitted documents for licensing, including Rhodes, Santorini, Kos, Donousa, Serifos, and Kythnos. The South Aegean waterway will include 16 seaplane ports in the Dodecanese islands and 14 on the Cyclades.

Meanwhile, the Ionian islands are swiftly moving ahead with relevant projects after licensing approval for the ports of Corfu, Paxi and Patra to be operated by Greek Water Airports. Awaiting the green light are the islands of Kefalonia, Ithaki, Lefkada, Zakynthos and Meganisi.

Maria Toktor, head of Strategic Planning at Grecian Air Seaplanes and Greek Water Airports described the project as being of “national importance”, significantly strengthening the Greek economy.

Greece’s waterway project paves the way for similar activities across Europe and aims to enhance the country’s reputation and profile internationally while attracting more travelers thanks to upgraded products.

At the same time, waterways and ports are expected to improve island connectivity and the standard of living mainly on remote islands, ensuring transportation in the harsh winter months.

I hope you know what you are doing. Been at this for forty years and most fail due to listening to seaplane manufactures advice.

It’s never too late. There was an attempt, a few years back, but it wasn’t fruitful. Let’s hope this time they’ll succeed.
