According to reports the program is scheduled to become operational in 2026. However, the Commission, which released an outline of the platform’s operation, said the transition period from the current in-person application system to the new digital short-stay visa scheme could take as long as seven years. Photo source: European Commission In this time, Schengen member states can decide whether they wish to be a part of EU VAP and inform notify the Commission and eu-LISA. According to authorities however, some countries may decide to transition to digital procedures sooner. By 2030 however, transition will be mandatory. It should be noted that the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) application process is different than the Schengen visa. Under the new rules, Schengen short-stay visas will be issued in digital format and include a 2D barcode, the visa holder’s biometric facial image and will be printable. Applicant data will be temporarily stored by the system. The decision to move to digital visas is aimed at increasing security and limiting false documentation. At the same time, authorities say it will help facilitate travel procedures and lower costs for both applicants and EU governments. In the meantime, as of 2026 with the official launch of EU VAP, changes will include the choice to apply for Schengen visas through a single platform; applicants can upload digital documents; and visa fees can be paid online. It should be noted that the first applications will require in-person appointments with embassies and consulate services. By 2028, there will be a full transition to the online platform and visa stickers will be replaced with digital barcodes. The move will not affect visa-free travelers. However, starting in May 2025, visa-free travelers will need to get pre-travel authorization through the ETIAS.
