Athens Welcomes New Year 2024 with Live Music, Fireworks Display

Thousands of Athenians and visitors were treated to a New Year concert and impressive fireworks display to celebrate the arrival of 2024.

Taking place at Syntagma Square in Athens, the City of Athens’ New Year’s Eve party offered a night of live entertainment featuring the Athens Municipality Philharmonic Orchestra followed by the performances of Greek singers Nikos Portokaloglou and Marina Satti.

Shortly before midnight, the new mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, took the stage to celebrate the countdown to the New Year.

“It is a unique and unprecedented experience for me to welcome the New Year, here, with all of you,” Doukas, who was sworn in as mayor just a few days ago, said to the audience.

In his speech, the mayor highlighted the value of community and solidarity.

The mayor said: “I invite you to believe in the small and big miracles that can happen, if we all join our forces, for a more humane, green and creative Athens, to reduce the inequalities that plague our society. For the Greece we love and dream of. Here tonight, as 2024 arrives, let’s keep our dreams alive and work together to make them come true. May the new year make us all fairer, more united, more optimistic”.

Hosted by TV presenters Nancy Zampetoglou and Thanasis Anagnostopoulos, the municipality’s New Year event was broadcast live by state-owned broadcaster ERT1 and ERT World, reaching all of Greece and the whole world.

The celebration of the first night of 2024 continued with a party at the Varvakeio Agora central market of Athens, which lasted until the early morning hours.
