The Municipality of Athens and the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) have launched a “green competition” with Organization Earth, aiming to make the Greek capital a more sustainable city.

Named “Greening the Grey”, the competition invites the residents of Athens to “bring nature to their homes and neighborhoods” by converting their balconies, terraces and courtyards into “green corners”. Participants are invited to share photos of their green areas by uploading them to the Earth Organization’s website and have the chance to win gifts while doing their part in making the city more sustainable and beautiful.

“Through the green competition we want to motivate citizens to have a more active role… It is up to all of us to make Athens greener, more resilient and more sustainable,” Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said.

Competition details

Participants can upload their photographs from April 10 to May 10. The best photos will be selected through an online vote that will run from May 1 to May 25. The winners will be announced during a special ceremony on World Environment Day on June 5 and receive their prizes from the mayor and the sponsors of the action.

The first prize will be gifts up to the amount of 800 euros, followed by the second prize (gifts up to 500 euros) and third (up to 250 euros). Additionally, the three winners will also receive a voucher for a two-person dinner at one of Athens’ finest restaurants.

The next 10 best entries will receive gifts up to the amount of 90 euros each.
