A contract for antiflooding protection projects in the Municipality of Loutraki-Perahora-Agii Theodori, located along the Gulf of Corinth and approximately 80 kilometers west of Athens, was recently signed at the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

This municipality is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, comprising several communities, including Loutraki, Perahora, and Agii Theodori. Loutraki, in particular, is renowned as a popular spa destination.

According to the ministry, the new contract includes projects for eight streams in Loutraki where they intersect with major roads.

With a total budget of 23 million euros, the projects are funded by the “Environment and Climate Change 2021-2027” program and are expected to be completed within two years, by mid-2026.

During the signing, Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras underlined that these works, along with additional projects for redirecting three more streams in Loutraki, aim to protect the town and its surrounding areas, which are significant recreational destinations.

“We are building infrastructure with high durability to counteract the growing climate crisis, as part of a comprehensive strategy for managing water resources,” Staikouras said.

Greek Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Tachiaos noted that the signing of this contract represents a crucial step toward antiflooding protection and green development in the wider vicinity of Loutraki within the regional unit of Corinthia.

Tachiaos highlighted that the upcoming projects will improve the quality of life for local residents by preventing potential destruction from heavy rains, which have intensified in recent years due to climate change.

“With this area being at a high risk of flooding, these projects will enhance its resilience to such events while also protecting ecosystems and groundwater from pollution,” he said.

Christos Dimas, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance and a member of parliament representing Corinthia, was also present at the contract signing.

He stressed that the regional unit of Corinthia has faced several natural disasters in recent years, including significant flooding.

“We all understand the importance of these projects, which we hope to inaugurate 30 months from now,” Dimas added.
