The Greek city of Thessaloniki in Macedonia was highlighted as an ideal year-round destination for Israeli travelers in a special feature released on October 27 in both the Jerusalem Post newspaper and its accompanying podcast.

Titled “Thessaloniki: A Home Away from Home”, the feature shares the experiences of journalists David Zev Harris and Mark Simon Gordon, showcasing the city’s rich history, vibrant daily life, and welcoming residents.

“Thessaloniki offers visitors 2.300-plus years of history, tremendous shopping, and a Jewish story like no other in Europe,” the tribute writes.

Founded in 1932, the Jerusalem Post is Israel’s oldest and largest English-language daily newspaper and the most-read English news website in Israel and the global Jewish community. The Jerusalem Post Podcast Travel Edition, created by Harris and Gordon, aims to transport Israeli audiences to destinations around the world.

Strolling the city with a local

From September 27 to 30, Hella, a local resident, guided journalists through the city’s main attractions and introduced them to its history spanning from antiquity and Byzantium to modern times.

As they strolled through Thessaloniki’s streets, they explored local markets, engaged with residents, and savored the city’s gastronomy.

“The locals are a friendly bunch,” the tribute adds. “Don’t be surprised if you’re invited to join them for a glass of ouzo.”

Alongside the feature, the Jerusalem Post introduced Thessaloniki to Israeli audiences through a podcast available on its website and Spotify, accessible for approximately three weeks.

The trip was organized by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and the Thessaloniki Tourism Organization (TTO).

The GNTO noted that Jerusalem Post listeners and readers will be introduced to Thessaloniki’s attractions and thematic experiences as a holiday destination, while also connecting with the city’s rich Jewish history.
