The Region of the Ionian Islands is intensifying its efforts to boost tourism from the US market, according to an announcement from the regional authority. Currently in New York, Regional Governor Giannis Trepeklis is meeting with local Greek-American organizations and the Greek Consul General to further promote the Ionian islands, including to the Greek-American community. Promoting the Ionian Islands in the US Speaking to the local press, Governor Trepeklis highlighted the importance of tourism for Greece’s economy, particularly for the Ionian Islands. He pointed out that the region has not been promoted as strongly in the US market compared to other destinations, such as the South Aegean and Crete. “While millions of Americans visit Greece each year, only a small percentage choose the Ionian Islands,” he said. “We are working to change that. Our region offers stunning beaches, rich history, vibrant culture, and exceptional gastronomy—all of which make it a unique, safe, and attractive destination.” Ionian Islands Regional Governor Giannis Trepeklis with the newly appointed Deputy Governor for Greeks Abroad, Eleni Papanastasatou.
