Corfu, Ionian Islands.

The Region of the Ionian Islands is intensifying its efforts to boost tourism from the US market, according to an announcement from the regional authority.

Currently in New York, Regional Governor Giannis Trepeklis is meeting with local Greek-American organizations and the Greek Consul General to further promote the Ionian islands, including to the Greek-American community.

Promoting the Ionian Islands in the US

Speaking to the local press, Governor Trepeklis highlighted the importance of tourism for Greece’s economy, particularly for the Ionian Islands. He pointed out that the region has not been promoted as strongly in the US market compared to other destinations, such as the South Aegean and Crete.

“While millions of Americans visit Greece each year, only a small percentage choose the Ionian Islands,” he said. “We are working to change that. Our region offers stunning beaches, rich history, vibrant culture, and exceptional gastronomy—all of which make it a unique, safe, and attractive destination.”

New York Travel Show 2025 participation

As part of its promotional strategy, the Ionian Islands Region will participate in the upcoming New York Travel Show at the end of January. Governor Trepeklis noted that American tourists have significant purchasing power and diverse interests, beyond just sun and sea tourism.

“American tourists are sophisticated visitors who seek a wide range of experiences,” Trepeklis explained. “Our goal is to showcase the Ionian Islands to these new, influential markets.”

Collaboration with the Consulate

“The consulate is fully committed to assisting the Ionian Islands Region in any way possible to establish a stronger presence in the US tourism market,” said Kanara.

Furthermore, Trepeklis acknowledged the invaluable contribution of Greek-Americans from the Ionian Islands to the region’s cultural heritage. He also discussed ongoing infrastructure and sustainability efforts in the region, including water supply safety, green energy projects, waste management, and climate change initiatives.

On Saturday, November 30, Governor Trepeklis and Deputy Governor Papanastasatou will attend a special event in New York organized by four Greek-American associations from Corfu.
