As of January 1, the new, increased rates for the Climate Resilience Fee – imposed on Greece’s hotel rooms and short-term rentals per night – have come into effect.
Introduced in 2024, the Climate Resilience Fee is an additional daily charge applied to guests of hotels, lodgings (rooms/apartments for rent) and short-term rentals. The revenue generated from the fee is allocated to a dedicated emergency fund for natural disaster preparedness and response. The fee replaces the previous “stayover tax”, which was introduced in 2018 for hotel and lodging guests (rooms/apartments for rent).
The updated fee rates, as outlined in the new tax law passed by the Greek Parliament and confirmed by Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Christos Dimas, are applicable to short-term rentals, lodgings (rooms/apartments for rent) and hotels, except those located in architectural heritage buildings, as well as youth hostels and campsites. For hotels the fee varies depending on the accommodation category. The fee is applied per night per hotel room/rented room-apartment/villa/short-term rental.

These declarations must be submitted by the last day of the month following the issuance of each receipt.

Having booked and paid for holiday in Greece 2025 at a 5 star hotel I was taken aback by the jump in resilience tax afraid after this holiday won’t be back
If you happen to place a group in a 4-star hotel this means that the cost for a single room increases by 13,3 % with a room price of 75 €/night (with the new tax 85€).
This extra cost imposed by the government convinced me to decide that my Easter group will be the last one that I’ll bring to Greece.
This is a useful summary of the changes to the fees, but unfortunately it doesn’t state categorically that the charge is per room/apartment/unit per night, and not per person per night. Is it possible to edit the article slightly to make this abbsolutely clear?
Hello Mr Powell. The fee is applied per night per hotel room/rented room-apartment/villa/short-term rental.
question: is the fee meant per night per person or per night per room?
Could you please clarify this for me?
thank you very much
Hello Dr. Bolz. The fee is applied per night per room/short-term-rental, etc.
This won’t be popular with tourists or hotels alike, yes other country’s are imposing charges but not on this level a certainly not as high.
