Zakynthos Welcomes Increased Travel Traffic for June

Tourist traffic to the Ionian island of Zakynthos recorded a modest rise, up by 5.01 percent for June, compared to the same period in 2014, marking an overall 4.12 percent increase for the first six months of the year.

According to figures released on Monday by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (HCH) Financial Officer and Laganas Hotel Association President Christina Tetradi, a total of 118,972 travelers visited the island in June this year compared to 113,299 in the same month in 2014, with the six-month figure at 189,923 in 2015 against 182,405 last year.

The number of travelers from the UK has increased by 10.91 percent. The number of holidaymakers from the Netherlands is up by 12.31 percent, from Austria by 18.92 percent, from Italy by 68.72 percent and from Norway by 28.07 percent.

On the downside, the number of tourists from Germany has dropped by 14.94 percent, from France by 14.04 percent and from Russia by a massive 83.26 percent.

Mrs Tetradi noted in the statement that due to the political instability and financial situation in Greece, last-minute bookings have come to a grind, while the number of cancellations by travelers booking online has reached by up to 80 percent.

She added that there have been no cancellations by tour operators thus far.
