According to data released by AIA, domestic as well as international passengers reached record levels for the January-April period, with 1.92 and 3 million, respectively. Both Greek and foreign travellers enjoyed a robust rise at the level of 12 percent and 10 percent, respectively. The number of flights at Athens airport during the first four months of the year was close to 50,000 (49,393), recording a significant increase of 7.2 percent. Domestic flights increased by 8.3 percent, while international flights saw 6.4 percent growth. The airport’s passenger traffic in April alone also reached record levels, amounting to 1.47 million, exceeding the respective 2015 levels by 1.2 percent, despite the fact that April’s passenger traffic was affected by the 24-hour strike on April 7 and the comparison with April’s 2015 extremely strong passenger numbers due to the positive and combined impact of both the Catholic and the Orthodox Easters. Domestic passengers grew by 4.3 percent, breaking the April 2015 record, whereas international travellers saw a minor decline of 0.5 percent. On the other hand, Greek travellers continued to increase but at a lower rate than in the previous months, growing by 5.7 percent, whereas foreign visitors were marginally below the April 2015 traffic (-1.8 percent), mainly due to the high 2015 Easter levels.
