Photo: GTP Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni recently inspected the archaeological site of the Acropolis in Athens to determine the measures that should be implemented for its safe reopening and operation on May 18. During her visit to the site, Mendoni gave instructions for the strict implementation of the health protocols due to be announced by the special committee of the Health Ministry, as part of efforts to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Furthermore, she discussed ways to improve access and exit through the narrow area of the Propylaea, and better manage waiting times and the ticket validation process for visitors. In addition, Mendoni visited the old Acropolis archaeological museum, next to the Parthenon, which is expected to undergo restoration work. An international competition for the museum’s upgrade is set to be announced soon. She also inspected the works in process for the installation of a new lift that will enable access to people with disabilities and the elderly, while she announced that the ministry intends to acquire two electric cars in order to further facilitate access to the archaeological site. Last week in Parliament, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced his intention to support the sector through a package of specific measures and proposals. He has also called on the country’s health committee of experts to examine the possibility for Greece to safely host cultural events this summer.
