Greek Tourism Ministry Event to Showcase Western Macedonia Wines

The wines of the Western Macedonia region, northern Greece, will take center stage this weekend during a three-day promotional event organized by the Greek Tourism Ministry.

The event, to run on November 12-14, is part of an ongoing program of similar happenings with the first taking place last July on Santorini.

The event, organized with the support of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and the Western Macedonia Region, aims to promote Greek wines and present the opportunities for the development of wine tourism as part of a wider tourist experience.

The tourism ministry is aiming through similar actions across Greece to spotlight wine production as a way of reviving local economies and creating the conditions for sustainable development which will in turn create alternative tourism options.

The three-day event – to be covered by Greek and international press – will include tourism of a winery in Amyntaio, which is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected regions, wine-tasting sessions at production units as well as participation in the region’s famous “Kazania” tsipouro distilling tradition.   

The event will also include presentations by wine producers and experts, the agriculture and environment ministries and by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA).

“The goal is to create a holistic approach to a traveler’s experience, to create a multilevel and multidimensional package of activities and experiences through which one can get to know the beauties of each particular location of our country,” said Tourism Minister Sofia Zacharaki.

Earlier this year, Zacharaki announced the launch of the country’s first portal dedicated to wine tourism and presented the country’s wine tourism strategy during the 5th UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism in Portugal.
